Rate My Takeaway has been one of the most popular food reviewing channels on social media and YouTube since the Covid days – and it’s only gone from strength to strength. Rate My Takeaway has grown a YouTube subscription count of 773,000. Each video of host Danny Malin trying food all over the UK gets 100s of thousands of views, sometimes in the millions. The iconic one of the Grandma in Bolton serving food from her house has 3.9 million views. A lot of the success of Rate My Takeaway has come from the Yorkshire icon Danny Malin himself – whose nature and demeanour is one of the warmest on the internet – but now Danny has stated he’s quitting, erupting a lot of behind the scenes drama and the two left behind have responded. Here’s what’s gone down with the whole saga.
Over the weekend, Danny announced he’d quit Rate My Takeaway

In a video posted to his personal TikTok account he runs with his wife, Danny said “This video is something I’ve been contemplating making for a while. Something I didn’t think I’d ever do. At this point it’s come to be necessary. As you know on Rate My Takeaway, a video was put up last Thursday. Unfortunately, that is going to be the last ever episode of Rate My Takeaway where I will be the host.”
Danny explains how he can’t go into too many details about it yet, but that “the relationship between myself, the cameraman and the editor has become untenable. I’ve always said it’s three of us that we split things equally, what I mean about that is obviously the monetary side of things.”
Danny thanked everyone for their support on the channel, which has been hugely popular now for nearly half a decade.
The cameraman and editor have now released a statement
The Rate My Takeaway team left behind, namely the cameraman and editor, have released a 1000 word statement on Danny quitting. They say they asked him to be the host after coming up with the idea for the show, and that they’re hurt people online have made wrong assumptions about what went down between the three of them.
The pair explained how they feel they have truly lost a friend. The statement says “But we also need to be honest: we’ve asked him multiple times to film a farewell video so things could be explained properly to the audience but chose not to and when we suggested sitting down together in the same room and filming both sides for you all, he refused. We had hoped for that closure as a team, but sadly it hasn’t been possible.
“The truth is, this whole situation has left us feeling a bit lost. And the hardest part is that, because we don’t have the confidence to speak on camera ourselves, it probably looks even worse from the outside. That’s why we’ve chosen to write all of this instead it’s the only way we feel we can be fully honest and clear with you.
“As for what happens next honestly, we don’t know right now. And that’s okay. Our main aim here is simply to make sure the past is understood clearly.
“At the heart of it, we’re just sad it’s ended this way. We’ve poured years into Rate My Takeaway, and it hurts to feel like people might see us in the wrong light. Whatever anyone chooses to believe, the truth is that we’ve always done our best for the channel, for Danny, and for the amazing community that grew around it.”
Danny has now posted a nearly 40 minute long explanation on YouTube
Danny has now posted a full video about what lead to his quitting of Rate My Takeaway on his new YouTube, giving even more context into what went down.
It’s unclear right now whether the Rate My Takeaway channel will continue going on without Danny and with a new host. Danny has said that he will continue with a new venture on his own.
