When it comes to influencer content, some videos really make you stop and ask, “Why?” In much the same vein, Instagram influencer Kayla Ryan is getting slammed over her recent “mermaid makeup” trend.
The 22-year-old beauty and lifestyle creator went viral with a clip that’s less flawless glam and more baffling. She swims in the ocean while applying makeup to promote waterproof SPF cosmetics.
In the video, Kayla decides it’s a brilliant idea to apply makeup while literally being in the ocean. With products held awkwardly between her teeth, she dabs them onto her face, captioning the post “Mermaid makeup” and “Mermaids wear SPF too.” Adorable concept? Possibly. Practical? Definitely not.
Unsurprisingly, people are slamming her for it

Viewers were quick to question the point of the stunt. One comment read, “Literally, what is the point of this?” while another added, “Why wear makeup in the water at all? Hopefully it’s actually waterproof.” Many labelled the whole thing as “pointless” and “attention-seeking.”
But the biggest complaints came from people worried about the environment.
One person wrote, “Hi babes! This is really bad for the water you’re in. Please put your products on before you get in the water.” Others worried about chemicals from makeup and sunscreen polluting the ocean and said this kind of behaviour gives a bad example. “Why you do that on the water? Those chemical might be affect the living organism. Respect nature.”
The video got thousands of views and lots of comments, mostly saying it was “ridiculous,” “unnecessary,” and “irresponsible.”
That said, not everyone was ready to condemn Kayla outright. One top comment, liked over 58,000 times, read, “Not y’all blaming global warming on one girl’s makeup while cruise ships leak gallons of oil every day. Be for real.”
Fair enough.
