Apple has decided to make a significant change in its iPhone naming strategy in 2027. To mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone series, the company will launch the iPhone 20 instead of the iPhone 19. This decision, confirmed by research firm Omdia at a conference in Seoul, marks a strategic move to revitalize the product line and capitalize on market dynamics.
In the first half of 2027, Apple plans to introduce the iPhone 18e and iPhone 18 models. These early releases are intended to distribute demand more evenly throughout the year and reduce dependence on traditional fall sales. In the second half of the year, Apple will introduce the iPhone 20 Pro, the iPhone 20 Pro Max and a second generation of the foldable iPhone. This strategy is reminiscent of 2017, when Apple skipped the iPhone 9 and introduced the iPhone X instead.
The decision to release the standard iPhone models earlier in the year is seen by industry experts as an attempt to stabilize sales throughout the year. According to Omdia, Apple initially expects lower demand due to these changes and plans to temporarily reduce iPhone panel orders by 20 million units. In the long term, however, this is expected to be offset by the introduction of foldable iPhones, which are considered future-oriented technology.
This strategic realignment could also be due to Apple’s consideration of moving to a semi-annual release cycle. This would allow the company to spread sales more evenly and benefit from periods when consumer demand is traditionally weaker.
