The Israeli Navy today fired on a fishing vessel and detained three Palestinian occupants, off the city of Gaza, the head of the enclave’s fishermen’s association, Zakaria Baker, told Spanish news agency EFE.
According to the same source, the fishermen were intercepted by ‘patrols’ from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and it is unknown whether there were any injuries or deaths.
The IDF, questioned by EFE, has not yet commented on what happened.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the Israeli military carries out similar actions daily against local fishermen and even confiscates their vessels.
With the worsening of the conflict in the enclave, following the Hamas attack against Israel, on October 7, 2023, Israel banned fishing activity and destroyed most of the fishing fleet.
Wafa also writes that there were numerous deaths of fishermen during bombings and other military interventions by Hebrew troops, forcing survivors and even other people to try to extract fish from the Mediterranean in “extremely dangerous” conditions.
The European Commission said today that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip “remains catastrophic”, despite the entry into force, on the 10th, of the ceasefire sponsored by the North American President, Donald Trump, and called for “unimpeded access” to aid for the Palestinian population.
“The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to be catastrophic”, declared the commissioner for matters related to that geographical area, Croatian Dubravka Suica, during a debate at the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, France.
