The residents of the Buenavista neighborhood criticize that the mayor, Rojo de la Vega, has not paid attention to their complaints

Mexico City.- Residents of the delegation Cuauhtemoc They expressed their dissatisfaction with the constant presence of sex workers in the surroundings of the Buenavista area, denoting the omission of the local administration to address the problem.

“It is already a nuisance of enormous magnitude since it is several years old and they cannot fix it,” mentioned a neighbor through the Facebook page “neighbors united of Cuauhtémoc.”

In this sense, the inhabitants criticized the mayor of the delegation Alessandra Rojo de la Vega for the lack of attention to the complaints, expressing that “I don’t know how the mayor doesn’t care about this issue, since since she doesn’t live here it doesn’t even matter.”

According to the testimony of the inhabitants, one of the biggest problems they face is “this parade of women almost without clothes and the families and children seeing this as if it were all normal,” which, they say, affects neighborhood coexistence and the family environment.

The inhabitants request that the authority take measures to reorganize the area and address the problem, mentioning that it would be feasible “to put them in a place where they will not be seen.”

Also, it was emphasized that the performance of sex work causes “sale of narcotics in the surrounding areas.”

One of the residents close to the area mentioned that “The presence of sex workers harms the peace of the neighborhood, it makes everything feel tense.”

Sex work has been one of the most reported jobs, in this sense, the workers themselves have reported that they receive discriminatory treatment and violence from society, and have accused police forces of being the main generators of violence against them.

In this sense, the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City (COPRED) determined that at least 64.1% of sex workers have suffered some type of violence or discrimination when working on the street.

“I saw how they beat a woman, and we had to stay silent, because they gave us a threat, if you say something, tomorrow we will come for you and you are the ones beaten. What did we do? We ran away, we didn’t stay because we already knew what could have happened to us,” Yahaira, a sex worker and member of the Street Brigade, mentioned in an interview.
