“It will not play any role in Gaza”

The United States maintains one of the inalienable premises of Donald Trump’s peace plan for the Gaza Strip: Hamas cannot in any way be part of the future authority that governs the Palestinian enclave. But in addition, the North American Administration considers that the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) should not play any role either because it is a “subsidiary” of the Islamist organization.

This is how the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, spoke this Friday during a visit to the new Civil Military Coordination Center in the south of Israel, near the Gaza Strip “The world needs to understand that on the other side of that yellow line (the area where the Israeli Army has withdrawn) there is still an armed terrorist group and that we have seen it act against its own population.”

“We are willing to collaborate with them [la ONU] if they can make it work. But not with UNRWA. UNRWA has become a subsidiary of Hamas,” he denounced, advancing that the agency “will not play any role” in the distribution of humanitarian aid based on the peace plan promoted by Trump.

Asked if Israel could resume the fight against Hamas in the hypothetical event that the objectives of the Peace agreement are not met, Rubio declined to confirm whether the US would give “permission” to its ally. “It’s about the fact that we are all committed to making this plan work. There is no plan B. This is the best plan. It is the only plan. We believe it is on the path to success,” he defended.

Although Hamas has reiterated its willingness to adhere to the conditions of what was signed, the head of US diplomacy has taken advantage of his visit to Israel to reiterate that the refusal of the Islamist organization to hand over its weapons would be a “violation” of the agreement. “I am not going to go into details about the mechanisms to enforce it, but it must be enforced,” he warned.

“We want to see a Gaza where people can live without Hamas… where they can go to work, and where they are not interested in joining, supporting or being held captive by a terrorist group,” Rubio added during his speech.
