Jamie Carragher has dismissed Manchester United and Chelsea’s chances of ever winning the Premier League under new bosses Michael Carrick and Liam Rosenior.

Carrick enjoyed a dream start to his spell as caretaker manager of United, overseeing a well-deserved 2-0 derby win over Manchester City.

Five-time title winner Carrick will be in charge for the rest of the season and will be hoping a productive run could even put him in contention for the permanent job.

Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim earlier in the month and are planning to appoint his long-term replacement in the summer.

Carrick was not initially believed to be in the running for the job but a hugely improved performance and an emphatic win over Man City has already led to suggestions he could force himself into consideration.

Carragher, though, believes it would be a mistake for Manchester United to hand Carrick the reins beyond this season as he doubts he could deliver the Premier League title.

The ex-Liverpool and England defender has the same opinion about Rosenior, who took over at Chelsea earlier this month following Enzo Maresca’s departure.

Former Strasbourg and Hull City manager Rosenior has won two of his three games in charge of Chelsea, a FA Cup clash against Charlton and a Premier League game against Brentford either side of a defeat to Carabao Cup semi-final opponents Arsenal.

‘I’m ruling out Michael Carrick,’ Carragher told Sky Sports when asked if Manchester United had already found their next permanent manager.

‘I go back to this question – do I believe this guy can win the league? I have to believe he can.

‘I don’t believe Man Utd will win the league with Carrick, or Chelsea will with Liam Rosenior. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, but you have to be special. I might be proven wrong.’

While Carragher warned Manchester United about appointing Carrick, he named Eddie Howe as a genuine candidate to take over at Old Trafford.

Howe guided Newcastle United to their first trophy since 1955 last season as the Magpies won the Carabao Cup while qualifying for the Champions League.

‘I’m a huge fan of Eddie Howe,’ added Carragher, who said Amorim was a ‘barely competent Premier League manager’ shortly before his sacking.

‘The type of football when Newcastle are at their best is high energy going forward, but the real thing I like is that you have to be able to handle the pressures of Manchester United.

‘When you’re in Newcastle and you live in that city, it’s constant and he handles it brilliantly.

‘Where I think he could also help is that Manchester United have a problem with young players – a lot of them don’t go on to fulfil their potential – but I think Eddie Howe is a great coach.’

Carrick’s next assignment as United caretaker manager is a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face title favourites Arsenal on Sunday.
