Jamie Lomas has promised a very dark return for Hollyoaks Later, which stages its long-awaited comeback to screens this evening.

The Warren Fox star spoke to Metro at a special screening in honour of Hollyoaks’ 30th anniversary earlier this week.

The beloved Channel 4 soap is marking three decades on air in a big way, with a huge stunt week as a plane crashed into the eponymous village, claiming the life of Peri Lomax (Ruby O’Donnell).

The final offering of the big week will be a crossover episode with Brookside, with iconic characters from the Close returning to screens for the first time in two decades.

There’s also a comeback in store for Hollyoaks Later tonight, which follows directly on from the Brookside-centric edition and features a big storyline with show favourite Warren Fox.

Later, as fans know, captivated fans for six series between 2008 an 2013. It is known for its edgier tone, allowing show bosses to go further with scenes and stories, taking the characters into a post-watershed world.

This big comeback will be no different, with Jamie assuring us that the return is ‘dark and exciting’.

‘Hold on tight!,’ he said. ‘It’s dark and exciting. It’s shot beautifully by wonderful director Sean Glynn – it looks like a feature film.

‘It’s fantastic. I think fans are going to be in for a bit of a shock.’

Laters sees Warren and Donny Clark (Louis Emerick) flee Brookside Close as their lives are left in mortal danger.

Though Donny and Warren have shared the odd scene previously, the storyline in question has allowed actors Jamie and Louis to work closely together – and Jamie had nothing but praise for his co-star.

‘Louis is ace,’ he said. ‘One of the nicest, kindest men you could meet. He’s a proper nice gentleman. And he’s old school – a seasoned pro.

‘It’s nice to come in and get the work done – and have a laugh off screen. You know he’s going to bring it – and that’s what this episode is all about.’

The narrative marks Warren’s comeback to not only Hollyoaks later but also the main evening soap – and it will allow for him to appear in the Brookside crossover instalment too.

‘It’s been great!,’ enthused Jamie on his appearances across what are essentially three different shows. ‘It’s a stroke of genius to give a nod to Brookside – it was right that they did that.

‘And it’s brilliant to have them intertwine – to have the Laters straight after. I think people are going to be in for a treat.’

Hollyoaks Later airs Wednesday October 22 at 10:05pm on E4.
