Jannik Sinner was forced to retire from his Cincinnati Open final with Carlos Alcaraz – just six days before he begins the defence of his US Open title.

In the latest chapter of their enthralling rivalry, the World No.1 and No.2 faced off one final time ahead of Flushing Meadows.

But the match was virtually over before it began as Alcaraz stormed into a 5-0 lead against an out-of-sorts Sinner.

The World No.1 had ice on his head after an early changeover, and shortly after called on a physio to receive treatment.

A tearful Sinner then consulted the umpire and Alcaraz before deciding to withdraw due to illness.

The exact cause of Sinner’s illness was not disclosed, but extreme heat has been an issue in Cincinatti, with several players falling ill throughout the two-week tournament.

‘I’m super sorry to disappoint you. From yesterday I didn’t feel great, I thought I would improve but it came up worse,’ Sinner told the crowd after collecting his runners-up trophy.

‘I tried to come out, to make it at least a small match, but I couldn’t handle more.

‘I am very sorry for all of you. I know that maybe some of you, on a Monday, you had to work, had to do something else, so I’m really sorry.’

Sending a message of congratulation to his opponent Alcaraz, he added: ‘Of course Carlos congrats. Another title. Not the way you wanted to win but it’s amazing what kind of season you’re producing.

‘You and your whole team are doing amazing. Keep it up. I wish you only all the best for the U.S. Open and the rest of the season.’

Sinner was due to play in the revamped US Open mixed doubles event on Tuesday with his partner Katerina Siniakova, but his particpation is now in doubt.

The 24-year-old commences the defence of his singles title on Sunday, with the draw taking place on Thursday.
