It looked like a scene straight from the apocalypse, but it was very much real.
Wild footage, obtained by CNN, shows the moment a delivery truck for the popular Mexican soda company Jarritos was swallowed by a sinkhole in Mexico City’s borough of Iztapalapa, the most populous in Mexico City with nearly 2 million residents.
The Mayor’s Office stated that the incident occurred on Saturday and that the collapse was caused by a failure of the town’s drainage system.
Reports say that no one was injured.
Apparently, sinkholes are a common occurrence in Mexico City, especially in towns like Iztapalapa, where the infrastructure is old. Heavy rainfall can also make the subsoil very unstable.
Iztapalapa is still recovering
The sinkhole comes just days after the town was overwhelmed by a deadly gas tanker explosion, which killed eight people and seriously injured 90.
According to reports, a gas tanker carrying 13,000 gallons of liquified petroleum gas on a major highway in Mexico City crashed and exploded on Wednesday.
Many victims suffered burns on 98 percent of their bodies, like a grandmother who covered her 2-year-old granddaughter from the shooting flames.
It’s reported that the explosion triggered a shock wave, resulting in damage to 32 nearby vehicles.
