Even though Jason Momoa has already played an iconic superhero in several movies, it wasn’t until Friday that fans finally got to see him in costume as the comic book character he was born to play. With no disrespect to his take on Aquaman, Momoa was always meant to play Lobo, arguably the greatest antihero to come from the pages of DC comics. He’ll make his big screen debut in Supergirl this June, but the first good look of his Lobo in action is now online.
“Finally,” wrote James Gunn, the Superman director who is in charge of the new DC cinematic universe, in a post on X and on Instagram. The accompanying video shows Momoa exit his trailer and echo that “finally” before footage from Supergirl plays. Lobo rolls up on his gnarly sci-fi space motorcycle, complete with his black and white facepaint, wild glam-rock head of hair, and big fat cigar.

An official character poster for Supergirl gives a nice full-body view of the alien bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia. The first trailer for Supergirl, released last month, contained a fleeting glimpse of Lobo but today’s reveal is the first proper look.

Fans Have Wanted to See Jason Momoa Play Lobo for a While
Momoa, who is known for his physic, distinctive look, and roguish attitude, has always been a natural fan-cast for Lobo. The character made his a 1983 DC comic, but he didn’t truly come into his own until the ’90s, where he was initially used as a parody of the over-the-top dark and edgy sorts of characters that were so popular during the era. (Like, for insance, Marvel’s Wolverine.) However, fans took an earnest liking in the foul-mouthed bounty hunter, and Lobo became a fixture of DC’s more sci-fi storylines.
Momoa, whose take on Aquaman in the old DCEU has plenty in common with Lobo in terms of attitude and even hairstyle, has admitted that he’s been a fan of the character ever since his comic-collecting days. Momoa told Fandango that Lobo was “always my favorite” during a 2023 interview. He was officially cast as Lobo in December 2024, to much rejoicing.
Lobo has not appeared in a live-action movie before, though Emmett J. Scanlan portrayed him in the Superman prequel TV series Krypton from 2018 to 2019. In Supergirl, Milly Alcock stars as Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. She heads to outer space to celebrate her 23rd birthday by doing some galactic bar-hopping before encountering an injustice that she feels compelled to address despite her cynicism. At some point she’ll presumably encounter Lobo. Jury’s out on whether or not they’ll get along.
