The plans for the next phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have undergone some reconstruction since actor Jonathan Majors was fired as Kang the Conqueror. Marvel actor Jeremy Renner speaks out on the circumstances behind Majors’ firing and scrapped Kang plans.
In an episode of Breakfast Club Power 105.1, Renner gets candid on the details behind Majors’ exit. The actor was immediately let go when news broke of him being accused of sexual assault. He was later found guilty of two misdemeanor counts for harassment and assault.
“I don’t know. I don’t know what the difference is between gossip and anything else,” said Renner.
“I don’t know enough about Jonathan and his situation to know,” he added. “I know they had big plans for that character, that’s for sure. Whatever transpired…that sucks, I think.”
Renner goes on to add that “due diligence really has to be played out” and that public opinion also likely played a part in Marvel’s decision to remove Majors.
The question about Majors arose as one of its hosts asked Renner why Marvel was so quick to remove Majors for the allegations, while they kept Renner when he also faced accusations.
In 2019, Renner’s ex-wife accused the actor of threatening behavior and substance abuse. The actor strongly denied the allegations, stating they were false and part of a heated custody dispute.
Since Majors was fired from Marvel, the plans to make Kang the Conqueror the next big bad for the following three phases of the cinematic universe were thrown out. Instead, the focus was shifted to reworking its long-term storyline and focusing on legacy characters and new team-ups.
The next phase of the MCU is already set to focus on the return of Robert Downey Jr., but as Doctor Doom. Kang has been quietly scraped from all projects, with the MCU not fully addressing the character’s absence.
