South Africa is intensifying its preparatory efforts for the historic G20 Summit, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on 22 and 23 November 2025.
The nation is the first African country to hold the event.
THE G20 SUMMIT IN JOHANNESBURG
The country continues to host a series of crucial meetings to set the stage for the leaders’ assembly under the theme ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability’.
Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, confirmed that the G20 Summit countdown is well underway. There are also numerous preparatory meetings already concluded, according to SA News.
FOOD SECURITY
These included the Sixth Health Working Group Meeting and the Third Task Force 2 Meeting on Food Security, which took place in Egypt.
South Africa also hosted a key Ministerial Meeting on food security in September.
Further bolstering the agenda, President Cyril Ramaphosa officially launched the G20 Experts Taskforce.
This pioneering initiative, chaired by Nobel laureate Professor Joseph Stiglitz, will examine global wealth inequality and its impacts.
TASK FORCE AT THE G20 SUMMIT
The task force will present its findings directly to world leaders at the G20 Summit. It aligns with South Africa’s commitment to address challenges facing low-income nations.
Despite criticisms regarding service delivery in Gauteng, President Ramaphosa has publicly affirmed the country’s readiness.
He stated that South Africa is more than prepared to host a “very successful” G20 Summit, according to IOL.
He emphasised that the event’s theme reflects urgent global needs and called for transformative investments in the Global South.
WELCOMING WORLD LEADERS
This is alongside reforms to international financial institutions that burden developing economies with high debt.
With approximately 100 of the 132 official meetings already held, South Africa is firmly on track to welcome world leaders for a pivotal G20 Summit.
The world now watches as South Africa prepares to make G20 history.
