The general secretary of the Socialist Party, José Luís Carneiro, considered this Wednesday (October 29), that the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, “has neither the conditions nor the authority” to continue in office and “someone” should “tell” her that.
In the statement he made at the PS national headquarters, in Largo do Rato, the socialist leader began by recalling that there are “more than 1 million Portuguese people without a family doctor” and many others “waiting for their first appointment”. “It was with astonishment and disbelief that we heard that there had been instructions from the Ministry of Health to make cuts in such a vital area of people’s lives.“, said José Luís Carneiro in reaction to the news of the Public, which states that the Executive Directorate of the SNS instructed hospitals to cut spending for 2026, even if this implies a reduction in the number of surgeries or consultations.
“Chaos was already in place in the emergency room and in the summer we had already remembered that it was inconceivable for pregnant women to walk from one place to another before giving birth. We have almost entered a new normality“, said José Luís Carneiro, who recalled that the socialists presented a proposal to which the Government gave no “response”.
In view of this, José Luís Carneiro expressed his “incomprehension” with this morning’s news and pointed out blame to Luís Montenegro, who he considered to be “the first person responsible” for the situation in the sector and the policies followed by minister Ana Paula Martins.
