Jurgen Klopp leads tributes to Diogo Jota after Liverpool player dies in a car crash, aged 28

Liverpool Football Club forward Diogo Jota died aged 28 this morning, shocking the sport world and beyond. Jurgen Klopp has posted a heartbroken tribute to the Portuguese player, who died in a car accident with his brother André in Spain v – leading tributes to Diogo Jota from across the sports world.

The crash happened in Sanabria’s Zamora region where, according to the council of Zamora, firefighters attended the scene after Diogo Jota’s vehicle caught fire. According to Spanish press, the emergency services arrived at 1am Thursday morning. The Spanish emergency services confirmed that Diogo Jota and brother André died at the scene.

Jurgen Klopp, the German football manager who was at the helm when Jota signed for Liverpool FC in 2020, wrote a moving tribute on his Instagram after the devastating news.

Klopp writes: “This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it! I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André.

“Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace – LoveJ.”

Liverpool FC have also shared their official statement

In what will be the club’s only statement at this time, LFC shared “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Carragher is one of many from the football world to join the tributes to Diogo Jota, and shared on his Instagram page “Absolutely heartbroken by the sad news about Diogo Jota. Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids.”

Gary Neville paid tribute also, saying “That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family.”
