Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are in a fierce competition for Neo Rapoo, SuperSport United’s highly-rated 19-year-old left-back.
Rapoo’s rise through the ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. After a standout season with SuperSport and an instrumental role in guiding South Africa’s U20 side to the Africa Cup of Nations title, the young star has cemented his status as one of the most exciting defensive talents in the country.
While scouts from Scandinavia and the Gulf have expressed interest, domestic interest is heating up rapidly. A source within SuperSport has confirmed that both Chiefs and Pirates are “seriously after” Rapoo, who is widely tipped to become a future Bafana Bafana regular.
Pirates push hard following defensive departures
“Yes they are both (Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates) interested but SuperSport would prefer to sell to a European club,” a reliable insider revealed.
“But an offer has not come through yet. Also, the boy only has one season left on his contract, so there is a risk of losing him on a free next season.”
Orlando Pirates’ urgency stems from recent changes in their defensive line. With Paseka Mako released and Innocent Maela retiring, the Buccaneers have made left-back a top priority. Rapoo’s pace, composure, and attacking instincts fit the mould of what the club needs moving forward.
Chiefs eye solution to long-standing problem
Kaizer Chiefs have also identified Rapoo as a long-term solution for a position that has consistently troubled them in recent seasons. With a rebuild underway and a renewed focus on youth, the Amakhosi see Rapoo as a perfect fit for their new project.
Despite his aspirations of eventually playing in Europe, Rapoo remains open to a move within the Betway Premiership as the next step in his development.
His current contract situation adds another layer of urgency. With just one year remaining on his deal, SuperSport face the risk of losing the player on a free transfer if they don’t act fast.
