Kaizer Chiefs block foreign transfers amid Ighodaro saga – Why

Kaizer Chiefs have hit the brakes on all foreign player signings, including their targeted move for Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro, due to Premier Soccer League (PSL) foreign quota limitations and unresolved residency documentation.

The club’s interest in Ighodaro remains strong, but the Nigerian-born forward still awaits his Permanent Residence Permit (PRP), which would allow him to be registered as a local player.

Ighodaro deal hinges on residency approval

Chiefs have already maxed out their quota of five foreign players, making it impossible to register Ighodaro until his PRP is officially granted.

“Well, it’s believed that the club is still interested in signing Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro. But they have to look at the foreign quota first. And for now they have five foreign players on their books. But they are waiting for Ighodaro to obtain his PRP which he has qualified for now. And that’s why they can’t sign any foreign players now,” a source revealed.

Chiefs’ current foreign line-up

The Glamour Boys’ foreign squad currently includes Rwandan shot-stopper Fiacre Ntwari, Angolan centre-back Inacio Miguel, Venezuelan central midfielder Edson Castillo, Congolese forward Makabi Lilepo, and newly acquired Angolan striker Flavio Silva.

One out before one in?

Chiefs are closely monitoring the situation with Castillo, who has reportedly submitted a request to leave. Should his departure go through, the club would immediately open up a foreign slot, potentially fast-tracking Ighodaro’s move.

Until then, Chiefs will need to wait patiently for Ighodaro’s PRP confirmation before reigniting any foreign player negotiations. Also Yusuf Maart leaving could potentially change the plan going forward too.

Will Kaizer Chiefs eventually announce Etiosa Ighodaro?
