Kaizer Chiefs boss speaks out on Nasreddine Nabi’s future

Kaizer Chiefs’ commercial and marketing director, Jessica Motaung, has left fans guessing about Nasreddine Nabi’s future at Naturena. Despite leading Amakhosi to their first trophy in a decade with the 2025 Nedbank Cup, Nabi’s position remains uncertain.

Motaung addressed the issue during the launch of the Toyota Cup, revealing that while Nabi is actively preparing the squad for a pre-season tour of the Netherlands, his future remains under internal review.

“Nabi is here at the village and we will make sure he goes to the Netherlands,” said Motaung.

“But we are looking at the entire process. A review of things still needs to be done.”

Trophy success overshadowed by league flop

Amakhosi’s cup glory has done little to mask their poor domestic form. Chiefs slumped to 10th place in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership after finishing ninth the season before, missing out on MTN8 qualification for a second straight year.

Motaung admitted the club cannot afford to repeat such underperformance:

“Ninth (in 2023/2024) and tenth (in 2024/2025) is not great. That is part of the difficult conversations we are having.”

“We cannot find ourselves there again. The vision has always been to ascend and take our rightful place, where we need to be in African and South African football. And we will make the hard decisions to get there.”

New signings quietly arrive at Chiefs

Though the club has yet to officially confirm any new arrivals, several players have already been spotted in the Amakhosi camp. Among them are former Orlando Pirates duo Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako, as well as midfielder Ethan Chislett.

Motaung remained tight-lipped on announcements, stating:

“We must allow processes to unfold internally. A review (of last season) has been done and there are discussions right now about where we are going and where we want to take things.”

Motaung blasts criticism over transfer spending

Responding to claims that Chiefs are unwilling to invest in the transfer market, particularly after losing Sipho Mbule to rivals Orlando Pirates, Motaung didn’t mince her words.

“Chiefs pays a lot of money, so I am quite surprised (about this). It is absolute nonsense, if you look at our investment in players and in the transfer space.”

She pointed out the club’s recent investments in both talent and technical personnel.

“You could see the investment last season in players and in our technical team. Chiefs are putting our money where our mouth is.”

What’s next for Nabi and Chiefs?

While the players undergo medicals and prepare for the Dutch tour, Nasreddine Nabi’s future hangs in the balance. Chiefs have entered a crucial period of self-assessment, and Motaung’s comments suggest that major decisions could follow soon.

Will Nabi still be fired at Kaizer Chiefs?
