Kaizer Chiefs face a challenge from Cape Town Spurs this week, as the relegated side prepares to argue that three players who recently joined Chiefs and AmaZulu must return to their Ikamva base. According to SABC Sport, Spurs claim binding contracts still exist for the trio despite their recent relegation.
Chiefs secure Velebayi and Baartman amid dispute
Earlier this month, the public broadcaster revealed that Spurs captain Asanele Velebayi and midfielder Luke Baartman had signed new contracts with Kaizer Chiefs as free agents shortly after Spurs dropped out of the professional leagues. Chiefs have officially secured these players on long-term deals, solidifying their commitment to the Soweto giants.
AmaZulu signs Bern as Spurs challenge validity
AmaZulu also acquired Liam Bern, confident that he was unattached after Spurs fell from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the amateur ABC Motsepe League. However, Spurs argue that all three players remain under contract and have demanded their return to training. With the players determined to continue their careers elsewhere, Spurs have escalated the matter to legal proceedings.
Both Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu maintain that players dropping to amateur status no longer hold professional contracts. They insist this means they could sign the players without paying transfer fees. Spurs counter that the clubs should have formally approached them to negotiate, intensifying the contractual dispute.
Virtual hearing scheduled as DRC prepares to rule
A virtual hearing is reportedly set to begin this week involving Cape Town Spurs, the three players, and their representatives. They will present their submissions before the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) issues a ruling on the matter.
The 2025/2026 season kicks off in early August with the MTN8 tournament, where AmaZulu face Stellenbosch FC. Kaizer Chiefs will miss out on this competition but will start their campaign in the Betway Premiership a week later. The legal verdict could come before the league begins, potentially impacting Chiefs’ squad plans.
Should the Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu signings return to Spurs or not?
