Katya has always been extremely honest and vulnerable about her addiction battles with substances – and she has now handily revealed that Drag Race never aired an emotional breakdown she had on season seven which resulted in her begging RuPaul to send her home. Katya did end up getting eliminated in that episode, and the show never aired the scenes on the main stage where she said she felt “embarrassed”. Katya is one of the most beloved alum of RuPaul’s Drag Race ever – and she and Trixie Mattel have been rewatching and discussing the entirety of season seven. This latest bit of unaired information regarding Katya asking RuPaul to send her home on Drag Race is some of the most personal and upsetting yet.
Katya was struggling not being able to attend AA meetings during filming
Speaking on The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie, Katya revealed “They didn’t air this, but I told RuPaul to send me home. I didn’t want to win.”
“On the main stage, after Santino [Rice] literally ripped me a new a*****e [during critiques], I was like … I knew that [they] were going to read me. I was so naive, and I was legitimately struggling, and I had made a comment that ethically [RuPaul’s Drag Race] could not use [on air]. I said: ‘I am freaking out, I haven’t been to a meeting, I am really struggling.’ So it was basically like: ‘Send me home.’ I felt so embarrassed.”
Katya explained earlier in the episode that “I was truly having a [mental breakdown]. I just wanted to go home, I hadn’t been to an AA meeting in six weeks. That was very difficult. I was a year and a half sober, for the first time, so that was tough. I was unraveling.”
RuPaul, who is executive producer and also went fully sober, would “understand” that the show couldn’t air what she said because Katya revealed details about the AA programme she was on which obviously has to stay anonymous and it’s against their conduct to discuss. Especially on a huge show like Drag Race.
Katya said she rang a producer and begged for it not to be included, and shared she was extremely happy that her asking RuPaul to send her home on Drag Race remained unaired.
