A King’s College London student has spoken out about feeling “unsafe” after someone broke into her student accommodation.
Natalia, whose name has been changed, told The King’s Tab her room had been broken into after someone entered it whilst she was out, with the perpetrator stealing her laptop and money.
The student pointed out the damaged bedroom lock, as screws for it were left lying on a shelf.
Natalia had been living in the accommodation for a year, but admitted it was the “first time” she’d experienced an incident like this.
Due to the door lock being “completely broken” the student thinks the robber could have been a member of staff. Although she says London is known for sometimes being unsafe, Natalia was still surprised to be burgled in a place with “24/7 security”, and urged others to “stay safe”.
The King’s student said she immediately reported the incident to the police, claiming the accommodation is working with authorities to investigate the building’s CCTV.
Speaking to The King’s Tab, Natalia expressed feeling disappointment at the situation. With it being unclear who the perpetrator is, she now doesn’t feel safe living in her accommodation.
She said: “To know that it was either someone directly from the staff, or that the staff gave somebody the information to break into an occupied room and create such an unsafe atmosphere for all students, is very disappointing.”
Natalia added: “All the accommodations preach that their number one priority is to support students and provide them a safe space to live when they’re away from home. But then something like this happens and all that support vanishes and you can’t do much else.
“So really it was just a reminder to be extremely cautious of our belongings”.
The Metropolitan Police has not yet responded to a request for comment.
