The mother remembers that even as a teenager she would escape to the peaks without warning. “He could go to Puigmal with his skis and bicycle on his back, go up at night and return at dusk,” he says. “Once the police called me because they had found him sleeping alone in a park with his jacket.” Eduard smile: “Once again the Mossos called me because I was riding roller skates on the road. I told them: let it finish, it’s coming“.
Fear never goes away. “Every parent suffers in a way. Some fear that their child will return drunk from a nightclub; we were afraid of not knowing what mountain it was on“he reflects Burgada. Still, they never tried to stop him. “We taught him that he should do what he liked, not what we liked,” summarizes Eduard.
His life in Norway
Hoy, Kilian He lives in Norway with his Swedish partner and their three daughters. “They climb mountains all together. The girls are already walking and running. It’s not an option not to do it.“says her mother, laughing. Her oldest granddaughter, at just four years old, already surpasses adults on the climbs. “She’s just like him when he was little,” she points out.
Over the years, Nuria He has accompanied his son in almost all of his big races. “I can’t see them from home. I need to see his face. Based on how I see him, I know if he’s okay.” He knows that many of his friends did not return, that the mountain takes lives. “But you can’t stop doing what you love,” he insists. “There are people who die in a car or in a factory. We choose this“.
Eduard nods. “Life is about continuing and enjoying what you do. We will meet in some shelter, on some peak.” And there is the invisible thread that unites the family Jornet: a heritage of freedom, effort and risk that lives on among the snowy mountains and trails of Norway.
