According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), substance use disorders are chronic illnesses that may require several rounds of treatment while recovering. “Substance use disorders are chronic illnesses, and as with many other chronic illnesses, relapse or return to drug use after a period of abstinence is often part of the treatment and recovery process. Individuals with substance use disorder may require long-term or multiple episodes of treatment to achieve long-term recovery.”

Since Lamar Odom’s time as an NBA star, he has faced public headlines related to his substance abuse. In recent years, he has pursued several paths toward recovery from his addictions. One example of that came in May 2021, when Yahoo! Sports reported on Odom having ketamine treatments under the supervision of a doctor.

In addition to his own recovery efforts, Odom has sought to offer support to others who are facing similar challenges. In April 2023, Odom bought three rehab centers in an effort to make professional treatment easier to access for people who are seeking recovery.
