LATEST | Devastating fire breaks out on Signal Hill

Fire crews remain on high alert along the slopes of Signal Hill after a vegetation fire was successfully contained overnight, with emergency teams continuing to monitor the area for any possible flare-ups.

The City of Cape Town mounted a full-scale firefighting response shortly after the blaze was reported, despite Table Mountain National Park activating its own emergency partners.

Urban fringe

Authorities said the decision was driven by concerns for residents living along the urban fringe, where shifting wind conditions and steep terrain can rapidly alter fire behaviour.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the response included the deployment of eight major fire pumpers supported by six water tankers.

Once the immediate threat was brought under control, crews were repositioned near the Noon Gun area to closely monitor conditions and respond quickly should the fire re-ignite.

Smith explained that continuous water replenishment was critical, particularly given the narrow and uneven access routes in the area.

Precaution

Smaller all-wheel-drive water tankers, designed for rugged terrain, were used to ensure fire engines could remain operational throughout the response.

Although the fire had stopped spreading, authorities maintained a visible overnight presence as a precaution.

Fire officials warned that contained fires can still pose risks if wind conditions change or if smouldering embers go undetected.

New Fire Breaks Out Near Bo-Kaap

Meanwhile, firefighting teams have also been dispatched to a vegetation fire burning above Voetboog Street in the Bo-Kaap.

SANParks Table Mountain National Park Fire Management confirmed that ground crews are on scene working to contain the blaze.

As a safety measure, Signal Hill Road has been closed until further notice.

Authorities have issued an urgent appeal for all visitors on Signal Hill to evacuate immediately, citing safety risks as firefighting operations continue.

Members of the public have been urged to avoid the area, comply with all official instructions, and allow emergency services unobstructed access.

Residents and visitors are also encouraged to remain vigilant and report any signs of flare-ups.
