The Netflix documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish uncovers the shocking culprit of a cyberbullying case from Beal City, Michigan. In 2020, Lauryn Licari and her boyfriend, Owen McKenny, began receiving abusive texts from an “unknown number.” The harassing texts eventually escalated into daily, threatening messages packed with personal details only someone close could know.
At first, several of Lauryn’s classmates were suspected. But when the FBI got involved, they discovered her mother, Kendra, was the one sending the texts.
The revelation shattered the Licari family and shocked the community. Here’s where the Licari family, Owen, and Khloe Wilson, one of Lauryn’s classmates who was a prime suspect for a bit, are today, according to director Skye Borgman.
Kendra Licari Today
Kendra was arrested in December 2022. She pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor and was sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison and was released on August 8, 2024.
At the time Unknown Number finished filming, Kendra still expressed a desire to be part of her daughter Lauryn’s life. Borgman said while Kendra eventually agreed to appear in the documentary to share her perspective, the damage to her relationship with Lauryn is lasting.
Borgman told Tudum Kendra is remorseful, but the bond with her daughter has been “severely altered” and can never be the same.
According to The Cut, Kendra is living with family near Detroit and reportedly has little contact with Lauryn (even less than she had in prison).
Lauryn Licari Today
Lauryn graduated from high school in May 2025, per The Cut. Borgman described Lauryn as reflective and resilient, though navigating her mother’s betrayal remains deeply complicated.
Shawn Licari Today
This tragedy brought Lauryn and her dad, Shawn, closer. The documentary uncovered the beginning of the end of his relationship with Kendra amid the couple’s financial struggles and Kendra’s various lies.
Shawn and Kendra are now divorced according to The Cut. He has full custody of Lauryn.
Owen McKenny Today
Owen and Lauryn broke up before the case was solved. By the documentary’s conclusion, they were no longer in contact. He was the homecoming king and graduated in May 2025, The Cut reported.
Khloe Wilson Today
Khloe was a classmate, volleyball teammate of Lauryn’s, and close friend of Owen’s who was suspected of sending the harassing texts. The Cut reported Khloe signed a college volleyball deal in the school’s trophy-lined foyer.
