In Australia, four former soldiers have filed a class action lawsuit against the Australian Defense Force. They accuse the army of condoning systematic sexual violence and harassment. The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Sydney, could be supported by thousands of other women who have had similar experiences.
The allegations cover a wide range of abuses, including rape, assault, coercion and discrimination. Women who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force or training institutions between November 2003 and May 2025 and were victims of such attacks are eligible to join the lawsuit.
Law firm JGA Saddler, which is spearheading the lawsuit, emphasizes that the lawsuit is not just about financial compensation, but also about effecting change within the armed forces. The firm’s director, Joshua Aylward, said the damages sought must be high enough to compel the government and military to take action.
The lawsuit follows a ten-month attempt at mediation by the Human Rights Commission, which failed to produce a solution. The Australian Defense Force emphasizes that it is working on a strategy to combat sexual misconduct. A spokesman said there was no place for sexual violence in the armed forces and that all employees had the right to respect and a positive working environment.
The plaintiffs’ reports are shocking. A former Air Force member describes being treated with hostility and sexist comments in an environment with a 100 male to female ratio. Another plaintiff, who served in the Navy, reported receiving obscene comments and unwanted touching throughout her service.
A report by the royal commission into suicides in the Australian military and the role of sexual violence found that about 800 cases of sexual assault were reported between 2019 and 2024. It is estimated that 60% of these incidents go unreported and that the actual level of misconduct is even higher.
