African National Congress (ANC) veteran Tony Yengeni says there is a plot to oust Deputy President Paul Mashatile following scrutiny about how he was able to afford a R28.9 million mansion in Constantia, Cape Town.
The sentiment comes as Mashatile declared ownership of the mega home, which he had previously denied, claiming it belonged to his son-in-law, Nceba Nonkwelo.
TONY YENGENI ‘DEFENDS’ PAUL MASHATILE?
As per the 2025 Parliament’s register of members’ interests, among them gifts, here are the three properties which are reportedly worth R65 million, the former Gauteng Premier declared:
Description of property | Area where property is located |
Size of the property in square metres |
Residential family home | Constantia, Western Cape | 4 000 square metres |
Residential family home | Waterfall, Midrand Gauteng |
9 000 square metres |
Residential | Kelvin, Johannesburg Gauteng |
3 000 square metres |
Paul Mashatile earns R3.2 million per annum as deputy president of South Africa, and according to luxury real estate agent Gary Phelps, the Constantia home comes with a hefty upkeep.
Phelps told eNCA that this included rates and taxes of up to R40 000 a month, excluding essential maintenance services. A mortgage would cost at least a quarter of a million rand a month.
“You’ve got to earn about R1.2 million a month to qualify to buy this house,” he added.
Surprisingly, fraud-accused former ANC MP Tony Yengeni took to X (formerly Twitter), saying there is an unmistakable plot to remove Paul Mashatile and questioned why the focus hasn’t been placed on fellow ANC members who have more mansions and farms than Mashatile.
“There is a plot to remove Paul and its hotting up! [sic] Yet there are leaders in the ANC who have far more massive mansions in every city here & abroad..Not one farm..farms! Not one mine..Mines! You want me to go on..? The media knows them,” he wrote on X.
HAWKS INVESTIGATING SOURCE OF FUNDS
Meanwhile, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (also known as the Hawks) has confirmed that they are probing corruption-related claims involving funds used to purchase a R28.9 million property.
“We can confirm that an inquiry into corruption-related allegations made by the DA, including the purchase of a multimillion-rand house in Cape Town, has been registered for further investigation,” Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo told IOL.
On whether or not the Hawks are probing Mashatile or his son-in-law, Mbambo said they are not investigating an individual but a matter that was reported.
DO YOU AGREE WITH TONY YENGENI THAT THERE ARE MORE ANC MEMBERS WITH ‘QUESTIONABLE’ MANSIONS AND PLOTS OF LAND THAN PAUL MASHATILE?
