Lebron James Was One of the First People To Congratulate Tommy Fleetwood Sunday

LeBron James could relate to what Tommy Fleetwood was able to accomplish on Sunday.

Early in his legendary NBA career, James was looked at by many as someone who couldn’t close the deal after falling just short of an NBA title on multiple occasions. In 2012, he finally broke through and won the first of his four championships.

Going into the final round of the Tour Championship Sunday, Fleetwood had never won on the PGA Tour. The 34-year-old Englishman had posted top five finishes in all four majors and came painfully close to winning the Travelers and St. Jude Championship this year before faltering late at both events.

That was not the case this afternoon, as Fleetwood, who entered the day tied with Patrick Cantlay for the lead, shot two-under and won the Tour Championship by three strokes at 18-under for the weekend.

James, who has recently become obsesses with the game of golf, was locked in to Fleetwood’s quest all day, live-tweeting the action from Atlanta as it unfolded.

When Fleetwood’s final put on 18 went down, clinching the championship, LeBron took to X/Twitter to send his congratulations.

“Congrats and [salute] @TommyFleetwood1 !!!” James wrote. “That first one feeling is something else! Especially after dealing with adversity and shortcomings. Too.”

Fleetwood kept the faith

Despite his heartbreaking recent collapses, Fleetwood’s belief in himself seemingly never wavered, at least publicly.

The seven-time European Tour winner spoke on multiple occasions recently about maintaining a positive attitude.

“I work really hard on making sure that I make it all into a positive,” Fleetwood said last Tuesday before the Tour Championship. “Of course, I’m not going to feed you lies and say, Oh, Memphis. I thought I did everything great, or Travelers. I didn’t do anything wrong. Of course, I got things wrong down the stretch, and it didn’t happen for me. But you just learn from those experiences, and I think the overriding, I guess, emotions are a lot of positives. I would rather you be questioning me about not finishing tournaments off than not questioning me at all about anything. So I’ve obviously shown a lot of really good stuff and put myself in great positions.

“I’ve said every single time that I just want to put myself there again. I want to give myself another chance. I’ll finish it off at some point. I’ll get it right and I’ll get it right more than once. But being there is actually the hard part in a way.”

Fleetwood earned more than his first PGA Tour win Sunday

In addition to getting off the schneid on the PGA Tour, Fleetwood also took home the season-long FedEx Cup with his victory Sunday.

By the way, in doing so, he also banked $10 million. Not too shabby.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done before,” Fleetwood said, via CBS. “Whether I’ve won or not [before], I’ve still been proud of my career and where I’ve been so far, knowing that I still have a long way to go and a lot to learn. This doesn’t change that, really. This is just, hopefully, one win — the first of many to come. You can’t win plenty if you don’t win the first one. I’m just so happy that I got it done. Happy with my work ethic. I’ll continue to try and get better, try to be the best I can be.”
