Following the Lego NES and Game Boy, another retro console appears to be getting the brick built treatment.
Lego has teamed up with several gaming companies over recent years, to capitalise on retro nostalgia, between bricked versions of Nintendo consoles, the Atari 2600, and a working Pac-Man coin-op.
There’s also been a range of Sonic The Hedgehog sets aimed at kids, but so far only one aimed at adults and no attempts to recreate any Sega hardware… until now.
A new leak suggests Lego is expanding its Sega output with a set based on the 16-bit Mega Drive, or rather the console’s controller.
As shared on Instagram by leaker itavix_bricks, a Lego Mega Drive joypad is set to launch on September 8, 2025.
The controller is said to come with a stand and interchangeable stickers so you can identify it as a Mega Drive controller or one for the Sega Genesis – the console’s name in the US.
According to the leak, you’ll be able to open the front of the controller ‘to reveal a Sonic Green Hill Zone build on the inside’. This seems to explain why there’s a Sonic The Hedgehog logo on the leaked controller’s box.

The set is said to be 15x10cm and sports 260 pieces in total, so it’s pretty small. The weird thing is it’s not a normal shop product but a *gift with purchase* (GWP) that can only be acquired by spending over over €130 (£112) on unrelated Lego products.
Lego has never released any video game hardware products in this way before, so while it’s presumably an attempt to gauge how much interest there is in a brick-built Mega Drive this seems a pretty strange way to go about it – especially as the set will no doubt be preyed upon by scalpers.
The set hasn’t been officially announced yet, so perhaps there’s been some miscommunication in the leak, but it shouldn’t be long before we find out for sure.
Looking ahead, Sega is set to launch Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on September 25, 2025. An open network test will take place beforehand starting from August 29 until September 1 across all platforms except for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
During Gamescom, Pac-Man was revealed as post-launch DLC in the upcoming racer, while Sonic is set to make an appearance in Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac in return.
