Leonardo DiCaprio has been one of Hollywood’s top stars for nearly three decades and might rank among the all-time movie heartthrobs. Yet even DiCaprio has not been immune to feeling starstruck.
In a new interview with TIME–which named DiCaprio its Entertainer of the Year–the Killers of the Flower Moon star revealed that two actresses left him in awe early in his career.
Both actresses were major names in Hollywood
1996 was a big year for DiCaprio. After making his name in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993) and 1995’s The Basketball Diaries, he had major roles in a pair of 1996 films, Romeo + Juliet and Marvin’s Room.
In the latter, DiCaprio played a 17-year-old boy named Hank. Meryl Streep played his mother, Lee, and Diane Keaton portrayed Bessie, Lee’s sister and Hank’s aunt.
According to TIME, DiCaprio was ” awed by” both Streep and Keaton, but he “loved Keaton especially.”
As for why Leo was particularly Fond of Keaton, he told TIME the Annie Hall star’s sense of humor and laugh stood out.
“She had the most incredible laugh,” DiCaprio said. “It would echo through the entire set, and she made you feel like the funniest person in the world. I mean, burst-out-loud laughing. I’ll never forget it. I kind of lived to make her laugh every day on set, because it was so infectious. She was incredible.”
DiCaprio previously honored Keaton after her death
Keaton died on Oct. 11 of this year at the age of 79, with her family citing pneumonia as the cause of death.
A Hollywood icon, Keaton was immediately memorialized by many of her constituents, including DiCaprio.
“Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Brilliant, funny, and unapologetically herself,” the Titanic star wrote on his Instagram stories. “A legend, and icon, and a truly kind human being. I had the honor of working with her at 18. She will be deeply missed.”
DiCaprio also shared a photo of himself and Keaton together, presumably from their time working alongside each other in the 1990s.
