If there’s one thing we know to be true, it’s that Brits can’t get enough of Lidl bakery.

The bargain retailer is often voted as the UK’s favourite supermarket bakery, and it sells 122 of its All Butter Croissants every minute.

New items are constantly being added to the range, and shoppers have recently discovered that an iconic treat is back in stock.

Those of us who grew up in the 90s and 00s will have fond memories of iced school cake, topped with rainbow sprinkles, and Lidl’s version of the treat has returned and is in the bakery for 69p a slice.

Lidl has sold the retro treat as a ‘guest’ item in the bakery several times over the last year, and customers go wild for it every time.

The cake is topped with white icing and colourful sprinkles, and people say it’s the nostalgic snack of their ‘dreams’.

Others describe it as ‘lush’, a ‘10/10’ and think it is delicious when eaten with custard.

Metro also rated the cake quite highly as part of our huge Lidl bakery taste test. Head of social video, Alex Goldsmith, gave it a try and scored it 4/5.

She said at the time: ‘A well-executed take on the classic school cake. The sponge was moist and full of flavour, but the icing was a tad too thick to truly compare to the OG version.’

It’s not clear how long the cake is available for right now, but these limited-edition treats usually only stick around for a few weeks, or while stock lasts, so you’ll want to be quick to nab it while it’s there.

Something that’s also worth noting is that the price has gone up 10p since May 2025, when it was available for just 59p.

School cake isn’t the only exciting addition to the German retailer’s bakery section, as there are also a few brand-new products.

The most popular of the bunch seems to be the Banoffee Slice, which is a little more expensive than the school cake and costs 89p per piece.

On social media, Lidl fans have been raving about the banana and toffee treat, hailing it as ‘truly incredible’, ‘delish’, ‘insane’ and ‘a bloomin’ beaut’.

Caramel Cronuts and Pizza Pretzels have also been spotted in Lidl this month, so there’s an array of new things to try.

This comes after Kellogg’s also unveiled a new twist on an iconic product from the 90s.

Limited-edition Crushed Mini Eggs & Chocolate flavour Squares bars have recently hit the shelves in Tesco supermarkets, priced at £2.25 for a pack of four.

The product features the classic Rice Krispies cereal base, mixed with a chocolate syrup, then topped with crushed mini eggs and a chocolate drizzle on top.

A few other big foodie brands have also been making some major changes of late, with Walkers unveiling a brand new logo, which could have a hidden meaning.

Babybel also confirmed its packaging is going to be changing in the UK and Europe.

And Brits have only just discovered the real meaning behind the Jammie Dodger name – and it’s not to do with the jam filling.
