Listeria Risk: FSIS Warns of Contaminated Cauliflower in Ready-to-Eat Foods

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issues an alert for possible bacterial contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) in foods prepared with cauliflower powder that tested positive for the bacteria, used in FreshRealm products.

The issue was discovered when FreshRealm notified FSIS that the cauliflower rice used in these products tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

FSIS did not request a formal recall since the products are no longer available for sale. Cauliflower powder, an ingredient regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), contaminated with the bacteria, is not linked to any ongoing listeriosis outbreak investigation.

There have also been no confirmed adverse reactions or illnesses reported from the consumption of these products to date.

How to identify recalled products

The alert notice includes two types of products that contain the contaminated ingredient, marketed under other brands:

Blue Apron: “Dish by Blue A Pron Chesy Chicken Mac Wit Wit Vegetables” (13.05 oz), with comlegs of 25240 and

Marley Spoon: “BALANCE by Marley Spoon BBQ Sauce Beef Meatballs with Cheesy Cauliflower” (10.5 oz), con código de lote 25255.

What are the health risks of Listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the bacteria L. monocytogenes (listeriosis), especially for older people, immunocompromised people, pregnant women (risk of miscarriage or stillbirth), and young children.

When a healthy person is infected with Listeria, they may present symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache, neck stiffness, and confusion. In pregnant women, flu-like symptoms.

The call is to be attentive to any symptoms, since high-risk people can develop flu-like symptoms up to two months after ingesting the contaminated food. If you have ingested the product and present symptoms, you should seek medical attention.

To avoid conditions, it is recommended that people who purchased the product verify the batch information, and if so, avoid consumption, discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
