Literature and Democracy in Lusofonia in João Pessoa

Our Land, Our People – Ancestry, Identity and the Future of Democracy. This was the theme chosen for the 2nd Paraíba International Literary Festival. After the success of the first edition, the fair once again brings together Portuguese-language writers from countries such as Brazil, Portugal and Guinea-Bissau.

The event takes place in the capital of the state of Paraíba, João Pessoa, the easternmost city in the Americas. The date is November 27th to 29th. “FliParaíba 2025 is based on a humanist equation. Democracy can only be sustained where memory is valued, identity is respected and ancestry is understood as a force of permanence and transformation”, explains curator José Manuel Diogo, regarding the choice of theme for this year.

During the three days of programming, eight tables are confirmed, each with three authors. The choice is one of diversity: each panel will have an international author, another with a national Brazilian reach and an author from Paraíba. “This triad allows for a game of mirrors that tensions the local and the global, the traditional and the contemporary, the lived and the imagined”, reads the event’s official statement.

In addition to the diversity in each panel, which will also bring together literary editors, journalists and culture and communication professionals, the objective is that each conversation does not have a “comfortable consensus”, but rather “creative frictions, critical displacements and unlikely alliances”. According to José Manuel Diogo, “the meetings were designed so that authors, readers and mediators recognize each other as part of the same expanded conversation, even when they disagree, especially when they disagree”.

Among the confirmed presences are the Portuguese writer Inês Pedrosa and Portuguese writers Alberto S. Santos and Afonso Cruz Odete Semedo, from Guinea-Bissau, the Cape Verdean Germano Almeida and the award-winning Brazilian Itamar Vieira Júnior, as well as a series of authors who are on the rise in Brazilian literature, but not only. The fair will also be a space for various types of art, with the participation of names such as the poet Filosofino, Kalyne Lima, president of Central Única das Favelas and the rapper MC Marechal.
