Lorry crash closes M62 motorway in both directions during rush hour

A major motorway is closed in both directions after a lorry crash in the early hours of this morning.

The lorry hit a barrier on the M62 at junction nine near Warrington, Cheshire, at 3am, leaving fuel leaking out across the road.

National Highways said contractors are on scene and working to clear the large diesel spillage on the carriageway.

It added motorists are facing delays of around 45 minutes in the area and it is impacting commuters between Manchester and Merseyside.

Traffic is being diverted via the entry and exit sliproad at the junction.

Cheshire Police said that the road is expected to be closed for several hours.

The police force said in a statement: ‘At 3am on Friday, June 13, police were called to reports of a collision on A49, Winwick Road, Warrington.

‘The collision involved a lorry which had collided with the railings on the bridge over the M62.

‘The M62 is currently closed in both directions as a result, with a diversion up and over the junction.

‘The closure is expected to stay in place for several hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area. There are not believed to be reports of any injuries.’
