By August, the couple had moved into a flat in Delhi, seemingly happy. But their relationship, which began with selfies and social media posts, would later end in a fire that police say was deliberately staged to cover up a killing.
The romance turns sour
According to police, cracks appeared in early September when Amrita’s ex-boyfriend, Sumit Kashyap, a gas cylinder distributor from Moradabad, re-entered her life. Their past romance reignited, even as Amrita continued posting cheerful reels online.
Meanwhile, Ramkesh became withdrawn. “From Sept 8 to Oct 1, she posted around a dozen reels, lip-syncing to popular Bollywood tracks,” a police officer said, adding that her online activity masked the growing tension at home.
Feeling abandoned, Ramkesh allegedly began sending Amrita their private videos — a move police believe was meant to win her back but ended up as an act of blackmail. Enraged, Amrita demanded the hard disk containing those clips. When he refused, she decided to take matters into her own hands.
A deadly plot unfolds
Amrita moved in with Sumit at a rented house in Chhatarpur, where they planned to recover the hard disk. Sumit brought in a friend, Sandeep Kumar, to help stage a robbery at Ramkesh’s flat in Timarpur. On the night of October 6, the trio executed their plan. Investigators suspect Amrita tied up Ramkesh on the pretext of intimacy before Sumit and Sandeep arrived. During a scuffle, the group allegedly choked him to death while trying to force him to reveal the location of the hard disk.Realizing he was dead, they panicked. That’s when Amrita — who studied forensic science — and Sumit used their respective “skills” to cover up the crime. Police said, “They poured ghee, oil, and wine on the body, turned on the gas cylinder, and ignited it with a lighter.”
The trio then locked the flat’s gate from inside using a mesh and fled. Moments later, an explosion rocked the apartment as the gas ignited, completely burning the body.
How cops cracked the case
Initially, police thought an AC blast had caused the blaze. But inconsistencies emerged when CCTV footage showed masked figures leaving the building. Their mobile location data and digital trail pointed investigators toward Amrita, Sumit, and Sandeep.
When caught, the three gave conflicting statements. Police said, “Both Amrita and Sumit blamed each other during interrogation.”
All three have been arrested and are now in judicial custody.
