Vehicle rental in Madeira generated revenue of 17.1 million euros in the first quarter of this year, the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM) indicated today, pointing out that the fleet available in the archipelago is around 11 thousand vehicles.
“In the first three months of 2025, there were 102,852 vehicle rental contracts signed. Of these, more than half (58.0%) had the vehicle picked up at the airport, while the rest took place in hotels or offices” of the rental companies, says the statistics authority.
The data released today on the DREM website comes from the first quarterly survey of driverless vehicle rental companies in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, whose fleet totaled 11,069 vehicles, the majority of which were passenger cars (95.9%) and the remainder motorcycles (4.0%) and motorhomes (0.1%).
Between January and March 2025, the number of customers for vehicle rental services reached around 98,900.
The most representative nationalities were German (21.3% of the total) and Portuguese (20.1%), with Poland in third place (12.6% of the total), followed by France (9.2% of the total) and the United Kingdom (8.0%).
“In relation to income from vehicle rental services, 17.1 million euros were recorded in total”, says DREM, adding that, of this amount, 73.1% corresponded to the basic service (12.5 million euros), while the remaining 26.9% (4.6 million euros) relate to other income, namely additional insurance, second driver, GPS, child seat and airport tax.
