The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchezwill propose this Monday, in the European Councilo end of the seasonal time change, arguing that “it no longer makes sense”which practically does not contribute to saving energy and which, in addition, has “a negative impact” on people’s health and lives.
In a video published on the social network sees no reason to keep moving the clock forward and backward.
“In all the surveys in which both Spaniards and Europeans are asked, the majority are against the time change. Furthermore, science tells us that does not represent energy savingsand what science also tells us is that Biological rhythms are disturbed twice a year”, he explained.
For this reason, Sánchez announced that this Monday the Government of Spain will propose in the European Council that a vote be taken of the European Parliament, held six years ago, in which it was decided to put an end to the time changein order to eliminate this practice in 2026, activating the competent review mechanism in the Energy Council.
“What is useful policy? Well, it is one that listens to citizens, also listens to science and incorporates it into legislation”, concluded the prime minister in his message.
Clocks go back an hour next weekend
Mainland Portugal and the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores The clocks will be set back one hour in the early hours of next Sundaystarting winter time.
In the early hours of Sunday (October 26), in mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira, when it is 2 o’clock the clocks must be turned back 60 minutes, going to 1 o’clock. In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the change will be made at 1 am on Sunday, moving to midnight.
The legal time will then change again on March 29, 2026for the summer regime.
The current time change regime is regulated by a directive (community law) from 2000, which provides that every year clocks are, respectively, moved forward and backward one hour on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October, marking the beginning and end of summer time.
