Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro accused the United States of fabricating a new war, at a time when Washington was strengthening its military deployment in the Caribbean by sending an aircraft carrier there.
On Friday, official Venezuelan media quoted Maduro as saying, “They are creating a new eternal war. They pledged that they would not get involved in a war again, and here they are creating a war that we will prevent.”
The day before yesterday, Thursday, Maduro sent an appeal in English to the United States in which he said, “No to a crazy war, please.”
“Yes to peace, yes to peace forever, peace forever, no to crazy war, please,” Maduro said during a meeting with unions loyal to him.
Waving missiles
Two days earlier, Maduro threatened to use thousands of Russian missiles in his country to confront American threats.
At a ceremony attended by senior Venezuelan military leaders last Wednesday, Maduro said that Venezuela possesses at least 5,000 Russian-made short-range missiles known as “Igla-S” deployed at key air defense sites to “ensure peace.”
Maduro’s statements come at a time when the US military continues to amass an unusually large force in the Caribbean Sea off Venezuela.
Yesterday, Friday, the US Department of Defense (the Pentagon) announced the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier group to confront drug trafficking organizations in Latin America, thus strengthening the US military build-up that raises fears of the outbreak of war.
The day before yesterday, Washington announced joint military exercises with Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela.
US President Donald Trump launched a military campaign last September in the Caribbean region, which he said targeted “narco-terrorists”, and included the deployment of 10 F-35 warplanes and 8 US Navy ships.
US raids targeting at least 10 boats have killed more than 40 people so far, whose governments and families say most of them are civilians and fishermen.
