Major change at Tesco is about to make home deliveries a whole lot easier

Supermarkets are constantly on the lookout for ways to increase customer satisfaction — from bringing back a beloved 80s cake to stocking the shelves with everyone’s favourite hot chocolate.

And now, Tesco is about to make Brits even happier by making home deliveries that bit speedier.

The supermarket giant recently announced that it will be updating its rapid grocery delivery service Whoosh, so that shoppers can now fill up an entire basket, or what Tesco is calling ‘full basket shops’ for same day delivery.

Previously, order sizes for Whoosh had been restricted by the size and weight of a package that could fit on the back of a moped, meaning customers could just order a couple of items.

However, Tesco’s partnership with delivery platform Stuart, means that Whoosh can now utilise car and van driving couriers — meaning customers can fill their online baskets to the brim and still have their items delivered quickly.

However, location here does play a role. The availability of the Whoosh full basket option will depend on whether or not there are larger vehicles in the area capable of delivering heftier packages.

‘If you’re closer to a large Tesco store, you could literally order anything you want,’ Stuart CEO Cornelia Raportaru tells The Grocer.

Similar to other Whoosh orders, delivery for full basket orders will be set at £2.99, with no additional service charge.

Whoosh, which is currently available in over 1,500 Tesco stores — including 42 larger stores — has become increasingly popular among customers.

According to the chain, the rapid delivery service saw sales almost double in the last year — with speedy delivery times down to just 20 minutes.

Tesco CEO Ken Murphy sees Whoosh still in its infancy, with lots of space to keep improving and expanding.

‘It’s now growing at a really rapid rate. It has, we believe, some real competitive advantage that we want to exploit. So, you can see further investment in that. I think there’s quite a long way to go before we would say that model is mature,’ he noted.

Which supermarket does the best same-day delivery?

We all know Brits love a same-day delivery — and supermarkets in the UK have been going head to head to try and stay on top of increasing consumer demands.

Asda’s Express Delivery services has been championed for its quick times, however customers have complained about its high delivery fees — costing between £8.50 and £8.99.

Sainsbury’s Chop Chop service has received mixed reviews. You can order up to 30 items, with a minimum spend of £15 and a £4.99 delivery fee. However, some shoppers have complained of missing items and poor quality goods.

One unsatisfied customer was promised a refund within 24 hours but was left short of his change for well over a week: ‘For anyone living on a tight budget or needing essential supplies urgently, this kind of delay is unacceptable,’ he shared.

Many other supermarkets, such as Morrisons or Waitrose, offer same day delivery services through platforms like Deliveroo or Amazon.

Picking the right same-day delivery service for you will likely depend on your location and your flexibility.

Minimum spending restrictions and delivery fees vary greatly across the board so make sure you’re checking how each supermarket approaches things before you speedily check out.
