This article contains spoilers for tonight’s episodes of EastEnders, which air from 7.30pm on BBC One or can be streamed now on iPlayer.

Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) has bid farewell to Walford after reuniting with his wife Julie (Karen Henthorn).

As viewers of the soap know, he’s been living with old pal Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) for fear of burdening Julie with his young-onset dementia diagnosis.

Phil even decided to become his full-time carer after noticing Nige’s mental capacity declining.

His ex-wife Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) expressed her concerns about the situation, urging him to reach out to Julie or accept extra help.

That simply wasn’t something that Phil was prepared to do.

Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) then began to question whether Julie was even bothering to search for her missing husband, and checked out her social media for answers. He was shocked to discover she had launched a campaign 18 months ago to bring him back to their home in Scotland.

She strolled into Albert Square after almost three decades away in the first of tonight’s instalments, and demanded answers.

Jay cautiously explained that Nige had ‘changed’, but before he was able toexplain that his memory was rapidly worsening, she rushed out into the street and confronted Nigel and Phil.

Unfortunately, Nige had absolutely no idea who she was.

The situation escalated at home, where Julie questioned why Phil hadn’t contacted her earlier.

Nigel could hear the commotion and their arguing, and asked her to leave. As she sobbed in the Square Gardens, Phil showed her a video which had been prepared prior to Nigel’s downward spiral.

The video confirmed to her that moving forward was going to be a great struggle, but also revealed that the company Nigel gave Phil was just as important.

Despite that, she announced her intention to take him away.

Phil was furious, and by the time of tonight’s second ep, urged Julie to consider what Nigel wanted.

The difficult situation was somewhat resolved when Nigel agreed that he should try and rebuild his marriage. It wasn’t the news that Phil wanted to hear, and he sat alone in the kitchen as Julie packed the suitcases in the back of a taxi.

Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) attempted to make a breakthrough, but Phil had decided he was no longer required and crumbled. The taxi drove off, without a goodbye.
