All people born after January 1, 2007 are from this Saturday, November 1, prohibited from purchasing and consuming tobacco products in the Maldives. The goal is to protect public health and ensure a tobacco-free generation.
The measure was launched at the beginning of this year by President Mohamed Muizz, with effect from November 1, 2025. “Under the new provision, individuals born on or after January 1, 2007 are prohibited from purchasing and consuming tobacco products in the Maldives”informed the Ministry of Health of this Indian country.
“The ban applies to all forms of tobacco, and traders are required to verify age before sale.”, he added. This ban also covers the import, sale, distribution, possession and use of electronic cigarettes and vaporization products.
Visitors to the Maldives, a country with 1,191 coral islands known for luxury tourism, are also targeted by the measure. According to the Maldivian Ministry of Health, the measure “will protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation.”
The sale of tobacco products to minors now carries a fine of 50,000 rufiyaas (around 2,770 euros). Consumption of vaping devices is punishable by a fine of 5000 rufiyaas (277 euros).
In the United Kingdom, a legislative process is underway to ban tobacco consumption among younger generations. A New Zealand – the first country in the world to enact an anti-smoking law – ended up revoking the provision a year after its implementation.
