A man identified as Hiroya Yokoi31, was arrested by Tokyo police, Japan. The reason: he is suspected of create and market false and sexualized images of women who belong to the world of entertainment and television.
According to The Japan Timesthe subject would have generated more than 20,000 explicit images, with free AI software, involving 262 celebrities. The names of these celebrities were not detailed.
This is the first legal action in Japan against a creator of deepfakes of celebrities, the media noted.
The man paid his needs and debts by selling deepfakes
According to the investigation, Yokoi used free generative artificial intelligence software, which he learned to operate on his own through online articles and videos.
With this program, I could recreate with great realism the faces of actresses, presenters and models, placing them on fake bodies to produce explicit sexual content.
The accused himself admitted to the authorities that he manufactured deepfakes to obtain income with which to cover their expenses: rent, transportation, food, and even a payment on a student loan.
Between October 2023 and September 2024, it managed to raise around ¥1.2 million yen, equivalent to about $8,000 dollars.
In addition, he offered his images through a subscription system. Users who had to pay a monthly fee could access a basic gallery, while those who purchased the “premium service” received personalized material with specific celebrities.
According to data from the National Police Agency in Japan, more than 100 similar incidents were recorded in 2024, the majority generated by people from the victims’ school environment.
Amid this controversy, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated on his X account that excessive restrictions “have made ChatGPT less useful or enjoyable for many users who do not have mental health problems.”
