A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of a student in Cambridge.
Mohammed Algasim, aged 20, was assaulted on Friday 1st August near accommodation in Mill Park, Cambridge. Police were called to the scene at about 11:27pm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at 12:01am.
Cambridgeshire police say, “it is believed he was stabbed in an unprovoked attack.”
21-year-old Chas Corrigan, from Cambridge has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. He is appearing at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday 4th August. He is also due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday 6th August.
A 50-year-old man from Cambridge was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. He remains in custody at Thorpe Wood Police Station.
Mohammed Algasim was on a summer placement at EF International Language Campuses Cambridge.
In a statement to the Cambridgeshire police, Mohammed Algaisim’s family called him “a young man brimming with enthusiasm, brimming with chivalry and courage.” They said: “He was cheerful, chivalrous, pure of heart, quick to give, and passionate about others. Over time, he became the family’s charisma, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy in every gathering.”
A spokesperson for EF International Language Campuses Cambridge told The Telegraph: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our adult students was fatally injured on Friday night in a public space. Emergency services responded immediately, but the student tragically passed away.
“We are working closely with the local police, who are investigating the incident and have confirmed they made arrests.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We are providing support to all students and staff affected by this tragic event and have organised counselling sessions.”
A post-mortem examination will take place on Tuesday 5th August.
Detective Inspector Dale Mepstead said: “We would like to thank the public for their support and assistance following our appeal. The investigation remains ongoing, and we continue to urge anyone with information who has not yet come forward to contact us.”
