Manchester United have distanced themselves from a move for Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos but are open to strengthening Ruben Amorim’s squad in two areas during the January transfer window.
Reports have claimed the Premier League giants were considering a shock move for Ramos after he became a free agent at the age of 39.
Ramos, one of the best defenders of his generation, left Mexican side Monterrey earlier this month following the expiry of his contract.
The veteran centre-back, who won four Champions Leagues at Real Madrid, is keen to extend his professional career and is currently looking for a new club.
It was reported earlier this week that Manchester United had expressed interest in bringing Ramos to Old Trafford to bolster Amorim’s defensive options.

But ESPN say United have ‘no interest’ in signing Ramos and are not exploring a sensational deal to bring the Spanish legend to Manchester.
Ramos is approaching 900 club games, most of which were made during his extraordinary 16-year spell at Real Madrid.
The World Cup and two-time Euros winner lifted five La Liga titles at the Bernabeu as well as his four Champions Leagues, establishing himself as one of the most decorated footballers of all time and a Madrid great.
Either side of his spell in the Spanish capital, Ramos enjoyed spells at Sevilla and PSG, winning two league titles in France.
Manchester United are focused on signing younger players, having brought a number of ageing superstars to the club over the last decade to mixed results.
While Ramos will not be joining Amorim’s squad, the Portuguese coach is interested in signing a new midfielder and wing-back, potentially as soon as next month.
United have looked vastly improved from the team that slumped to a 15th-place finish last season and Amorim is keen for the momentum to continue in the second-half of the campaign.
But the Red Devils are aware their top targets will likely be unavailable during the January window so are open to going through the month without any incoming signings.
Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Conor Gallagher have all emerged as midfield targets for Manchester United, who are sixth in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.
While United weigh up January transfer signings, they are also considering offloading certain members of Amorim’s squad, most notably Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee.
Mainoo wants to leave on loan after a frustrating start to the season, with Italian champions Napoli keen to strike a deal with Manchester United.
Zirkzee, who has struggled at Old Trafford since being signed by Erik ten Hag in 2024, is wanted by Napoli’s Serie A rivals Roma.
Amorim’s side thumped bottom-placed Wolves 4-1 last time out and return to action against Bournemouth on Monday night.
