Manchester United have asked Ruben Amorim for his thoughts on two strikers after Viktor Gyokeres finally completed his move to Arsenal.

Gyokeres was believed to be Amorim’s first-choice target for the No. 9 position but the Sweden international rejected United in favour of a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The former Sporting Lisbon striker has joined Arsenal in a deal worth up to £64m, signing a five-year contract with the Gunners.

Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe over the last two seasons, scoring a staggering 97 goals in 102 appearances for Portuguese champions Sporting.

Manchester United were heavily linked with Gyokeres earlier in the summer but it quickly became apparent that Amorim’s former player favoured a move to Arsenal.

Despite this, The Athletic say United made one last-ditch attempt to sign Gyokeres earlier this month before finally giving up in their pursuit of the 27-year-old.

Gyokeres’ move to Arsenal is a substantial blow to Amorim, who is keen to sign a new striker despite the summer additions of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils were poor in front of goal last season, with £72m signing Rasmus Hojlund scoring just four Premier League goals and Joshua Zirkzee also struggling.

Despite missing out on Gyokeres, Manchester United remain interested in signing a new No. 9 for Amorim and are currently discussing moves for Benjamin Sesko and Nicolas Jackson.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the hierarchy at Old Trafford have asked Amorim for his latest thoughts on Sesko and Jackson, who both look set for summer moves.

Sesko was strongly linked with Arsenal before the Gunners began prioritising a deal for Gyokeres and is also a figure of interest to United.

The Slovenia international is five years younger than Gyokeres but does not boast the goalscoring record of Arsenal’s new signing, although he did register 21 goals in all competitions last season.

Sesko has also emerged as a target for Newcastle United after they were informed by Alexander Isak that he was considering a move away from St James’ Park.

RB Leipzig wanted a jaw-dropping £100m for Sesko earlier in the summer but have drastically slashed their asking price, with £60m now believed to be the figure suitors must hit.

Manchester United also hold interest in Chelsea striker Jackson, who looks set to leave Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

Jackson scored 17 goals during his first season at Chelsea and another 13 last term but Chelsea have seemingly replaced him with former Brighton star Pedro and ex-Ipswich Town ace Delap.

Why Viktor Gyokeres snubbed Man Utd for Arsenal

Following his move to Arsenal, Gyokeres said: ‘I just felt it was the right club for me.

‘What I heard from Mikel and [sporting director] Andrea Berta and just what I’ve seen in the past years, how they’ve been playing football.

‘When I played against Arsenal last season, I could really feel it was a very strong team and very difficult to play against.

‘That made me choose Arsenal, and of course all the history the club has and the massive fan base.’

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, said of the signing: ‘Viktor has so many qualities.

‘He is a quick and powerful presence up front, with incredible goalscoring numbers at club and international levels.

‘He brings a clinical edge with a high conversion rate of chances into goals, with his intelligent movement in the box making him a constant threat.

‘We’re excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to starting working with him.’
