Manchester United are ready to submit an offer to sign Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, according to reports in Brazil.

United have already held talks to sign Emiliano Martinez this summer and the Argentina international is keen on a move to Old Trafford.

However, United not prepared to meet Aston Villa’s £40 million asking price for the 32-year-old World Cup winner.

United are in the market for a new goalkeeper due to Andre Onana’s inconsistent performances in his two seasons at Old Trafford following his £47 million move from Inter in 2023.

Onana, who has attracted interest from Monaco this summer, is also set to miss the start of United’s pre-season campaign due to a hamstring injury and is an early doubt for their Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17.

The report claims that Botafogo are already preparing for John Victor’s departure as they have identified Atletico Mineiro goalkeeper Matheus Mendes as his replacement.

John Victor impressed for Botafogo during their Club World Cup campaign this summer and was named ‘Superior Player of the Match’ in their 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the round of 16.

The 29-year-old also delivered a standout performance in the 1-0 victory against Paris Saint-Germain, who play Chelsea in Sunday’s final, in Botafogo’s second game in the group stage.

John Victor joined Botafogo in a R$5.8m (£850,000) deal from Santos 18 months ago and helped the Brazilian side win Serie A and the Copa Libertadores last year.

He was named in both the Serie A and Copa Libertadores Team of the Year for 2024.
