Marcelo is expected to be discharged this Wednesday, but visits to Spain and the Vatican have been postponed

Cancellation of the visit to Spain that would take place from December 10th to 12th, was confirmed by Portuguese embassy in Spain: “Please be informed that the State visit of His Excellency the President of the Republic to Spain, scheduled for the 11th, 12th and 13th of December, has been postponed for health reasons. Accordingly, the reception in honor of the Kings of Spain has also been postponed”, is stated in the note released by the embassy. THE The visit to the Vatican should take place in the following days, between December 14th and 15th.

Positive evolution

The president of the board of directors of Hospital de São João. Maria João Baptista clarified during the afternoon that there is always a risk of infection, but at this moment it is reduced. THE The post-operative period is progressing “favourably, as expected”, but it is always necessary to “follow what is happening every hour”.

To president from the São João Local Health Unit (ULSSJ) mentioned that the head of state has already received a visit from the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, and the clinical team and people from the Civil House.

In the second press conference of the day to take stock of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s health status, Maria João Baptista said that “she has already eaten, tolerated the food and has already done the lifting, which is usual in these situations”.

“So it’s fine (…). There are some analyzes that need to be carried out, which are part of the routine. What has been done so far is fine. And, basically, it is necessary to understand if the intestine works normally, if you are eating properly. You have already had a light meal, as is usual in these situations”, said Maria João Baptista, who classified this Tuesday as an “important phase”, since it is the “first day after surgery.”

There was “sense” in going to the hospital

The doctor reinforced that “this surgery was carried out in a very timely manner”, praising the “sense” of the Presidency of the Republic team “for having sought health care in a very timely manner and, therefore, it went well”.

“If a few hours had passed, it might not have been like this (…). The President has been extremely cooperative and has respected very strictly everything that has been said by the health team”, he concluded.

If the surgery took place hours later and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was not able to finish his term as President of the Republic, the President of the Assembly of the Republic would have to temporarily assume the position. But Aguiar-Branco already rules out this hypothesis: “[Os portugueses] You can rest assured that you will not have the President of the Assembly of the Republic as President”.
