At the time my book, “Veva”, was going into production, I was struck by a dark doubt, the kind of shiver that no author wants to have. What shook me were some notes I had just come across, written by the pedagogue Maria Ulrich, who barely disguised her discomfort when talking about Margarida de Lima Mayer, her maternal aunt, “a complex personality, who combines unconscious egocentrism with limitless seduction and generosity”. I wondered if the neuralgic point, the shadow from which one could better understand the drama and temper of that unusual family, struck without losing the joy of living and complicity, had been in front of me without me recognizing it. What if the essential piece to access the Mayer saga was not the extravagant Genoveva (Veva), the cosmopolitan writer married to the integralist Ruy Ulrich, who deserved Salazar’s trust, but the impulsive and equally disconcerting Margarida?
