Kylie Minogue’s first choice of an actress to play herself in a hypothetical biopic is Margot Robbie, but the Barbie star has point blank said she couldn’t possibly.

In 2023 Kylie said Margot was her ‘dream’ casting, but Margot only just heard this news – two years later – while appearing on the Scott Mills’ BBC Radio 2 breakfast show this morning.

The Babylon star, 35, was gobsmacked, but her knee-jerk reaction was that she could never do Kylie’s singing justice, with her many hits including Spinning Around, All The Lovers, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, and The Loco-Motion.

‘She did not!’ Margot gasped on hearing this nugget of golden news. ‘Why has no one ever told me that before? That is wild information.’

Pressed as to whether she would say yes, the Aussie actor responded: ‘I am beyond honoured. Of course I could not do it. I can’t sing. I can’t sing like Kylie. I don’t like it when people can’t actually sing in a singing movie, you know?’

As Margot’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey co-star Colin Farrell began reading out headlines about Kylie’s sweet admission, an astonished Margot said: ‘Stoooop it!’

The beloved actress then launched into a story about how much she loves Kylie – and the time the Neighbours legend invited her out for an afternoon of cocktails. Casual.

‘Kylie by the way is the first concert I ever went to – the Kylie Fever Tour. Years later when I was over in America at this point, I got a call from my team being like, “Kylie Minogue would like to meet up with you,”‘ Margot began to explain.

‘I got there and I was like, “Wow.” She sat down – the coolest, warmest, most divine creature you’ve ever met. And she was just like, ” Oh I just, you know, thought you’re an Aussie and I’m an Aussie and we’ve never met. We should probably hang out. Thought we should just get cocktails. I was like, are you joking?’

She added: ‘There was no work conversation whatsoever. We just got drunk together. It was just the best. She just wanted to hang. We talked about everything. It was a wonderful afternoon.’

Putting words into her mouth playfully at the end of the segment, Scott Mills concluded: ‘Kylie, she would do it if she could do you justice, that’s what Margot’s saying.’

Laughing, Margot replied: ‘Fine. That’s a good compromise.’

Margot and Colin were in town to attend the London premiere of their new film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, which is a romantic fantasy directed by Kogonada, also starring Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Kevin Kline.

It follows a pair of strangers, David (Farrell) and Sarah (Robbie), and an unexpected journey after meeting at a wedding, which digs into their pasts together through a series of magical doors (obviously).

Oscar-nominee Farrell, 49, said on the red carpet he would ‘love to’ work with Robbie again, praising her for being ‘magic to work with, and to spend time with’.

‘There are actors in this film giving lovely performances in and around, but so much of this film is she and I just very close together. And with that in mind, the rehearsal process was just she and I and Kogonada in a room together for like a week and we didn’t even touch the scripts for the first three days,’ he told PA.

‘We just shot the breeze about our own lives and relationships and what it was like growing up with our families and our relationships with our parents and it wasn’t a therapy session but… she’s very open… and I’m fairly open as well.’

Margot turned heads at the premiere by wearing the most glorious sheer dress you ever did see, which was encrusted with jewels and silver beadwork, from Giorgio Armani Privé’s spring 2025 couture collection – a nod to the fashion designer after his recent death.

For her next trick, Margot is starring as Cathy in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights adaptation alongside Jacob Elordi.

After the initial trailer drop – which was steam to say the least – 19th century gothic romance purists expressed their worry about the classic story getting the Saltburn treatment.

‘The way this didn’t need to be a Wuthering Heights adaptation, like girl if you wanted to make a horny period piece then do that. No need to terrorise Emily Bronte,’ wrote @sshxniaa on X.

‘Emily Bronte is rising from her grave as we speak because why did they turn Wuthering Heights into Fifty Shades of Heathcliff and Cathy,’ said @daehaerys.

Ouch.
