María Elena Álvarez-Buylla Roces, former head of the now defunct National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), which at the stroke of former President López Obrador became the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conahcyt) and was now promoted in rank to become the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (Secihti), was very good at pseudoscience of appropriating other people’s money.
And she looked so serious and decent, right?
However, she denies everything and, in any case, points to the ‘damned neoliberal press’ for mounting a smear campaign against her. However, who should complain is the Superior Audit of the Federation (ASF), since it was this body that was in charge of unclogging the sewer in Conahcyt, by presenting a formal complaint to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) for possible mismanagement of resources that would have caused damage to the treasury of more than 79 million pesos during the administration of Álvarez-Buylla Roces.
At the beginning of this month, the authorities confirmed that the FGR, through the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption, was already integrating the investigation file against those found responsible.
In other words, while he unleashed a fierce witch hunt against 31 scientists, whom he accused before the FGR of organized crime and washing of money, at the same time he sunk tooth and nail into the Conahcyt budget to give himself the life of a sheikh and, at the same time, line to his mother, his daughter and his romantic partner. What a little mother!
And the truth is that there is nowhere to start with this lady’s misdeeds: in 2019, Conahcyt wasted 15.8 million pesos to hire a gourmet dining service with a chef, fifi waiters and even a nutritionist to design and supervise the dishes (lest Doña María Elena and her achichincles lose their figure).
The beneficiary of this contract was the company Pigudi Gastronomic, SA de CV And this at the expense of canceling international scholarships and closing public innovation centers, which it achieved thanks to cajoling López Obrador with an ideological and flattering speech.
Later, in case you already forgot, came the total failures of the Ehécatl 4T and Gätsi ventilators (supposedly free of neoliberalism, so that those infected with COVID would be cured faster) and the “Patria” vaccine, which we are still waiting for to be authorized by COFEPRIS. The same and for the sixth floor of the 4th Transformation it may already be available. Both projects are considered monumental frauds.
But if we’re talking about fraud, take a look at these: Álvarez-Buylla Roces “self-paid” 751 thousand pesos for a study on biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and genomics while she was director of Conahcyt and her mother, Elena Roces, authorized her 2.7 million pesos to explore “a crucial area of metabolic pathology: alterations in cell differentiation “immune cells and adipocytes within visceral fat tissue, and their link to systemic inflammation in rats with hyperinsulinemia and obesity.”
And he gave his romantic partner, Juan Carlos Martínez García (level 3 researcher at Cinvestav) more than 3 million pesos for “research projects.”
But as Raúl Velasco said: “There is still more!”
